# Doctano vs a family group chat for lab reports

> Doctano turns the lab reports you already have into one private, source-linked health timeline, with an AI that answers from your own results.

## The short answer

A family group chat reaches everyone quickly, which is exactly what it is good at. It is a poor record: photos scroll away, the caption carries the context, and nobody can find the 2023 report when a doctor asks. Doctano gives each person a separate profile, keeps reports on one timeline, and links every value to its source.

## Why the group chat wins

The group chat is not careless. It is the shortest route between a report and the people who care about it.

- It reaches people where the family already talks.
- A photo is the lowest-effort way to share a report.
- The reply thread carries the reassurance and the questions.
- Everyone sees the same message, without a new account or a new habit.
- It is good for the conversation that follows a result.

## Why it fails as a record

A conversation is organized by time, not by person or marker. That is fine for a chat and wrong for a history.

- The photo scrolls. A search for "report" returns a year of messages.
- The caption is the index: "Papa's sugar, March". When the caption is wrong or missing, the context is gone.
- Two people's results end up in one thread, with no separation between them.
- Nobody can tell which version is current.
- A value cannot be found across years, because the values are pixels in a photo.
- Access is membership of the group, not a decision about one person's record.
- The thread is a conversation, and conversations are not built to be audited.

## The record, separately

Keeping the record elsewhere does not mean abandoning the chat. It means the chat stops being the only place the report exists.

A tracker's job is narrower than a chat's. Doctano accepts PDF, PNG, JPEG, and TIFF files, up to 50 MB each, several at once, from any lab or region. It extracts test names, values, units, ranges, panels, and report dates, maps markers to LOINC codes, and normalizes names and units across labs. Each result is classified against the range on its own report as healthy, borderline, critical, or unknown. A result without a usable range stays unknown, and those labels are not diagnoses. Every value links to the original report.

Profiles keep one person's timeline separate from another's. Sharing is with an existing Doctano account, and people with access can view and add reports. DoctanoAI can answer from the selected profile's values, history, out-of-range results, and report text, and it may link back to reports. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or recommend dosages, and it can be wrong.

## Side by side

| What matters | A family group chat | Doctano |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reaching family quickly | Yes, that is what it is for | Not a chat; share a profile with an existing Doctano account |
| The report stays findable | No, it scrolls away | Yes, on the timeline |
| One person's results stay separate | No, one thread mixes them | Separate profiles |
| Who uploaded what | The sender name on the message | Each report sits in a profile, with its source file |
| Trend over years | No | Per marker, across reports |
| Source behind a value | The photo, if you can find it | Every value links to its report |
| Access control | Whoever is in the group | Share with an existing Doctano account that can view and add reports |
| Permanence | A conversation, not an archive | Reports stay until you delete them; deletion is permanent |

## The honest recommendation

**Keep the group chat for** telling the family that a report arrived, a quick question about who is taking someone to the lab, and the reassurance and follow-up that a photo usually starts.

**Move the record to Doctano if** you are the person who ends up hunting for the 2023 report, you manage reports for parents, a spouse, or a sibling, you want the same marker to line up across labs, or you want one profile per person rather than one thread for everyone.

Use the chat for the conversation and Doctano for the record. Send the result, then put the report where it can be found again. If someone needs access, share the profile with their existing Doctano account; they can view reports and add new ones.

## Questions

**Does Doctano post reports into a group chat?**
No. Sharing is with an existing Doctano account. People with access can view reports and add reports. Doctano does not send anything to a chat.

**Can I keep my mother's results separate from mine?**
Yes. Profiles keep each person's timeline separate. You can share a profile with an existing Doctano account, and that person can view and add reports.

**Who can see a profile I share?**
Sharing is with an existing Doctano account, and the people with access can view and add reports.

**What happens when I delete a report or my account?**
You can delete a single report from its options menu, or delete your account from Account. Deletion is permanent. Backups and operational copies may temporarily retain deleted data.
