# Uric acid blood test: what it measures and what moves it

> Doctano turns the lab reports you already have into one private, source-linked health timeline, with an AI that answers from your own results.

A waste product of purine breakdown, and a number that moves with food, hydration, medicines, and timing.

Uric acid is formed when the body breaks down purines, which come from cells and from food. The blood test measures how much uric acid is circulating. The level reflects production, kidney excretion, hydration, and recent intake together. A result does not confirm or rule out gout or kidney disease, and the range printed on your report applies.

Uric acid is one of the few blood results commonly discussed in relation to a specific symptom, which makes it easy to over-read. The number is a balance between production and excretion, not a verdict.

## What the test measures

Purines are part of DNA and of some energy-storing molecules. When cells are replaced and when purine-rich food is digested, purines are broken down, and uric acid is the end product in humans. Most uric acid is removed by the kidneys, with some passing out through the gut.

Blood uric acid therefore reflects both production and excretion. A change in kidney handling can raise the level even when production is unchanged, and a change in production can raise it even when the kidneys are working as before. Urate is the form uric acid takes in the blood, and many reports use the two terms interchangeably.

## Why it may be ordered

- When joint pain or swelling is being evaluated and gout is being considered.
- During the assessment of a kidney stone history.
- Alongside kidney function tests, when excretion of waste products is being reviewed.
- As part of some metabolic panels, or to follow a value that has changed before.

Uric acid is not a general measure of kidney function. It is one waste product whose level depends on kidney excretion, and it is read with creatinine, eGFR, and the reason the test was ordered.

## The unit on your report

| What you may see | Unit | What it reflects |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Uric acid, serum uric acid, urate | mg/dL | The concentration of uric acid in the blood, on the milligram-per-decilitre scale. |
| Uric acid, urate | umol/L | The same concentration on the micromolar scale, common on reports that use SI units. |
| UA, UrA, URIC | — | Abbreviations some laboratories print in place of the full test name. |

## Why this page does not print a range

Reference ranges for uric acid differ between laboratories and are often sex-specific. Method, population, age, pregnancy, and clinical context can shift the interval, and some labs print separate ranges for men and women. A range from another report or a website is not your range.

The range printed on the report that produced your value is the one that applies. Doctano keeps that printed range with the result and does not substitute a general range. Read the value and the range in the unit the report itself prints.

## What a high value can mean

A higher uric acid can be associated with reduced kidney excretion, higher purine intake, alcohol intake, dehydration, and increased cell turnover. Some medicines, including some diuretics, can raise it. Body weight and genetics also contribute.

A high value can be associated with gout, but it does not confirm or rule out gout, and it can be present without joint symptoms. It is also read in kidney stone evaluation and alongside kidney function results. The clinician reads it with the person's symptoms, history, and other tests.

## What a low value can mean

A lower uric acid is less often the focus of a report. It can be associated with a low purine intake, some medicines that increase uric acid excretion, liver disease, and pregnancy. It is often not interpreted on its own, and the report's range and a clinician's reading decide whether it matters.

A low value is not automatically a concern, and it is not automatically reassuring. It is one line among several.

## What can move the value

- **Recent food and alcohol.** Purine-rich food and alcohol can raise the level for a time.
- **Hydration.** A low blood volume concentrates the blood and can raise the result.
- **Kidney handling.** Reduced excretion raises the level even when production is unchanged.
- **Cell turnover.** Conditions with rapid cell breakdown can increase production.
- **Medicines.** Some classes raise uric acid and some lower it; a clinician can say whether a medicine is relevant.
- **Pregnancy.** Blood volume and kidney handling change, and the level can fall.
- **Method.** Different assays can produce small differences on the same sample.

## What to compare it with

Creatinine and eGFR give the kidney-excretion side of the picture. Urea is another waste product, but it moves for different reasons. A urine uric acid measurement, when reported, looks at excretion rather than the blood level. The previous uric acid from the same laboratory is the best comparison for a trend, because the value can fluctuate between samples.

## How to see the trend

Doctano keeps the printed unit and reference range with each result, normalizes the marker name across labs, and places the value on the profile's timeline. Each point still opens the report it came from.

Because uric acid can move between samples, a single higher value is a weaker signal than a repeated pattern. Verify the value and the unit against the original report, especially when the two results came from different laboratories.

## What this page is not

This page explains the test in general. It does not interpret your result, diagnose a condition, or recommend treatment. It is not medical advice. Verify the value and the unit against the original report, and discuss the result with a qualified professional.

## Uric acid questions

**What is uric acid?**

It is the end product of purine breakdown in the body. Purines come from cells and from food, and uric acid is carried in the blood until the kidneys remove it. A blood test measures the concentration that is circulating.

**Does a high uric acid mean I have gout?**

It can be associated with gout, but it does not confirm or rule out the condition. Some people with high values never have joint symptoms, and gout is assessed from symptoms, examination, and sometimes joint fluid. Discuss the result with a qualified professional.

**Why does uric acid change from one test to the next?**

It moves with recent food and alcohol, hydration, cell turnover, kidney handling, and some medicines. Laboratory method can also produce small differences. A single value is less informative than a pattern from the same laboratory over time.

**Is uric acid a kidney function test?**

Not in the way creatinine and eGFR are. It is a waste product that the kidneys excrete, so it can be affected by kidney handling, but it does not measure filtration. It is read alongside kidney function results and the reason the test was ordered.

## Limits

**This is not a diagnosis.** Uric acid is read with your other results, your history, and the range printed on your report. Verify the value against the original report and discuss it with a qualified professional.
