# How the Doctano health score is calculated

> Doctano turns the lab reports you already have into one private, source-linked health timeline, with an AI that answers from your own results.

A single number built from a set of results that is always incomplete. Worth understanding before you read it.

This is the Markdown version of https://doctano.com/guides/health-score. The HTML page is the canonical version.

Each result is labelled against the range on its own report, then weighted by the marker's clinical significance, so higher-impact markers move the number more. In-range results keep full weight, near-limit results weigh less, and out-of-range results less again. The weighted average becomes a score from 0 to 100 per profile.

## What goes into the score

1. **The results in one profile.** Not the whole account. Each person gets their own score, because each person has their own results.
2. **The most recent value for each marker.** Older values stay in the timeline, but the score uses the latest one per marker from the report with the latest report date.
3. **The label for each result.** In range, near limit, out of range, or no data, decided by comparing the value with the reference range printed on the same report.
4. **The clinical significance of each marker.** A weight that reflects how much the marker typically matters, so a group of minor results cannot outweigh an important one.

## How the labels are weighted

The score is not a count of normal results. Each result contributes according to its label and its marker's weight, and the contributions are averaged.

| Label | Effect on the score | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| In range | Full contribution | The value is inside the range the laboratory printed. |
| Near limit | Reduced contribution | The value sits close to a boundary, inside it or just outside. |
| Out of range | Reduced further | The value sits outside the printed range. |
| No data | Same contribution as in range | There was no usable range to judge against, so the result is not treated as abnormal. |

That last row matters more than it looks. A report printed without ranges produces results that are labelled no data, and no data is not a fault. It means the app has nothing to compare against, not that the value is fine or bad. The practical effect is that an incomplete report does not drag the score down.

## Why clinical significance matters

Not every marker carries the same weight in a summary. A result that usually matters a great deal should count for more than one that is often incidental, otherwise a long panel of minor tests would drown out the few results worth attention. Doctano weights each marker by its clinical significance. In the profile score, a result without a recorded significance still receives a default weight, so it is not silently dropped.

## The three bands

| Score | Band | What it describes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 85 to 100 | Healthy | Most of the weighted results are in range. |
| 50 to 84 | Borderline | A noticeable share of the weighted results are near a limit or outside it. |
| Below 50 | Critical | A large share of the weighted results are outside their ranges. |

The bands describe the composition of the results, not the state of a person. A low score means something in the profile is out of range and weighs heavily. It does not mean an emergency, and a high score does not rule one out.

## Body-system scores use the same method

The dashboard can show a percentage for a body system as well as for the whole profile. Those are computed with the same weighting method, from the latest result per marker within that system. A marker without a recorded clinical significance is left out of a body-system percentage, so a system with few weighted results is easier to move, in both directions.

## What moves the score

- **Uploading a report** with new markers or newer values replaces the latest value for those markers.
- **An out-of-range result on a high-significance marker** moves the number more than the same result on a minor one.
- **Deleting a report** removes its results, and the score is recalculated from what remains.
- **A report with no usable ranges** adds results that are not treated as abnormal.

## What the score cannot tell you

- It cannot tell you how you feel, or what an examination would show.
- It cannot tell you whether a result is clinically significant for you, which depends on history and context.
- It cannot tell you what was never tested. Missing tests are missing, not normal.
- It cannot be compared with another person's score, because the underlying panels differ.
- It cannot replace a clinician's reading of the whole picture.

## How to read your own score sensibly

Treat it as a compact summary of which results need attention, and go to the results themselves. Open the markers that are out of range, check them against the report, and look at their history. A score that moves should send you to a value, not to a conclusion.

## The health score, explained

**What is the health score out of?**

It is a percentage from 0 to 100, calculated from the results in one profile. It is not a percentile and not a comparison with anyone else, so a score of 90 does not mean better than 90 percent of people.

**Which results count toward the score?**

The most recent value recorded for each marker in that profile, taken from the report with the latest report date. Historical values are kept for the timeline, but the score uses the latest one per marker rather than every value ever uploaded.

**Why did my score change without any new result?**

The score is computed from the results currently in the profile. Uploading a report, deleting one, or adding a marker that was previously missing all change the set of results behind the number.

**Does a high score mean I am healthy?**

No. The score only reflects the lab results that Doctano has. It knows nothing about symptoms, examination, conditions that were never tested, or results that are missing from the profile.

**What do the bands mean?**

A score of 85 or above is shown as healthy, 50 to 84 as borderline, and below 50 as critical. The bands summarise the weighted average of result labels. They are not diagnostic categories.

## What this is not

**The score is a summary, not a diagnosis.** It reflects only the results Doctano has, and a high number does not rule anything out. Check important values against the original report and speak to a qualified professional.
